Poems For Burnley

On Good Friday I spent the day in Burnley with Kerry Morrison. While we talked to the people of Burnley about their thoughts on the place I wrote poems and gave them out to the people we met.. Here are a couple of them and a link to the website for the Hidden Places project that we were a part of.

Brenda Burnette is 32
Fair enough
She'd like to help
But she's on the special brew
She lives up in Burnleywood
She's volunteer with the kids if she could
Organise the youthy
Get a comedian in
She's got a list of contacts
Hundred and twenty quid all in
And that's cheap
To get the kids off the street
But with a police record
She'd not gonna meet
New regulations
The council have been in and knocked he place down
Then ran out of money and left it
Where's the regulations now?

Robert Robinson is singing about New Orleans
Professional busker 5 songs on you tube
get them up on your computer screen
The people of Burnley raise an eye
As they stand and smoke
and wander by
He has a drink of orange juice
Little amp and doc martin style shoes
Hey Joe where you going with that gun in your hand?
Just up past Woolworths
And it's not a gun it's a bottle of Lucozade in my hand

Cake

After work I ran for the bus
Almost got run over but made it, just
In a flap I found my wallet
But there was only 1.28 in it
Not even minimum fare these days love
Feeling embarrassed I got off
I started the walk
As the bus pulled away
Put my wallet in my bag
Then down at the bottom
My fingers touched onto something forgotten
Wrapped in a serviette inside a plastic bag
A small tower of cake from my cousin's wedding
The icing had already been eaten
It crumbled in my fingers
As I put it in my mouth

Quintessential

Quintessential seems too long
For me to write a poem on
I like short words like pot, hot, what,
I don't use long words a lot
Like the Beatles
Love me do
Sent with love
From me to you
Rock n roll songs
All the great hits
Simple rhymes to make you shake it
Forget the fancy words
Keep it sweet
Get to the quintessential heart of the matter
And feel it beat!

The Sky

The sky, the sky, the sky above
Open heaven over us,
Crystal blue or clouded up
Breathe it in when you look up
The heavy open sky above
Looking out over us
Holding tight on to us
The never ending sky above

Custard Creams

If you've nothing in for tea
Take it from me
Don't eat a full packet of custard creams
Spread them out, up to 5 a day
and a nation's favourite they will stay

Water that runs though cities and towns

Water that runs though cities and towns
Is a funny subject under the ground
By the NCP car park if you're on your break
Take a look over the far railing to see a little lake
Lost and forgotten the river runs by
Crisp packets and the odd fish
Brighten up this murky spot
However hard it tries the city can't stop it
You could go down there in Summer
If the council built a ladder
For a nice beach holiday
But it's a health and safety matter

every time you fix one thing something else needs fixing

every time you fix one thing
something else needs fixing
so it might be a good idea
to stop and do some thinking
if your shirt is ripped
or the button on your heater is broken
it can wait until tomorrow
today will keep on going
the birds will keep on singing
the sun will keep on rising
the sky may still be bright and blue
think of all the things that are good as new
